Men's Basketball Faces Road Test at Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - With memories of a 74-68 win against Arkansas two years ago, Appalachian State University men's basketball seeks a repeat performance when it takes on the Razorbacks Friday at 8 p.m. EST at Bud Walton Arena.

The Mountaineers are 2-1 on the season following Tuesday's 77-44 win against Lees-McRae. Isaac Butts scored a career-high 22 points in the contest on 11-of-12 shooting and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds.

The big man ranks third in the Southern Conference with 9.3 rebounds per game and stands 13th with a 13.3 scoring average.His 82.6 field goal percentage easily leads the league.

ASU leads the SoCon with a .490 team field goal percentage through three games. The Apps also top the league in field goal percentage allowed, as the squad has held opponents to just 36.8 percent from the field and 19.6 percent from downtown.

Donald sims hopes for a repeat performance from the last time he faced Arkansas, as the then-freshman scored 24 points in the win. The guard is second on the squad with 13.0 points per game and has connected on 94.7 percent of his free throw attemps.

Senior Ryann Abraham has led the Mountaineers in both assists (4.0 apg) and steals (3.0 spg) in all three games on the season and ranks in the top five in the Southern Conference in both categories. His 4.0 assist-to-turnover ratio is third in the SoCon.

Following Friday's game the Mountaineers travel to face No. 20 Louisville on Monday at 8 p.m. EST.

Noting Friday's game

A Win Would...
• Make the Mountaineers 3-1 on the season for the first time since 2006-07, when ASU opened the year 12-3.
• Give the Apps a 2-0 advantage against Arkansas.
• Be the first road win in two games for ASU.

A Loss Would...
• Move ASU to 2-2 on the season
• Even the series with Arkansas at 1-1.
• Be the 19th against SEC opposition, and the second in as many seasons.

Scouting Arkansas
• UA stands 1-1 on the season heading into the Friday night matchup.
• After pummeling Alcorn State to open the season, the Razorbacks suffered a 99-69 setback on Tuesday against Louisville.
• Rotnei Clarke leads the squad and nation with 33.5 points per game. The sophomore scored 51 in the opener and 16 against UL.
• Clarke is the reigning SEC Player of the Week.
• Marshawn Powell averaged 11.0 rebounds in the first two games for the Razorbacks.

Vs. the SEC
• Appalachian is 2-18 against current members of the Southeastern Conference.
• Both wins have come in the last three seasons and on neutral courts, as the Apps defeated Vanderbilt in the San Juan Shootout in 2006 and took down Arkansas in Little Rock in 2007.
• ASU is 0-4 against both Georgia and Tennessee and has never faced Florida or Mississippi State.
• Last season, ASU faced Kentucky for the first time and fell 93-69 behind Jodie Meeks’ 46 points.
