ASU quarterback Armanti Edwards returned to practice on Monday for the first time since injuring his right foot on Aug. 5.
BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University quarterback Armanti Edwards returned to practice on Monday afternoon for the first time since injuring his right foot in a lawn-mowing accident 26 days ago.

After running under the supervision of Appalachian’s athletic training staff earlier in the day, Edwards suited up and participated in most drills during ASU’s 90-minute practice at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The three-time all-American began rehabilitation of the foot injury in earnest two weeks ago and resumed throwing last Monday. In last Thursday’s practice, he joined his teammates briefly for 7-on-7 drills, but Monday marked the senior’s return to full workouts.

ASU’s athletic training staff has officially listed Edwards as questionable for Saturday’s season opener at East Carolina.

WILLIAMS RETURNS TO ASU: Richie Williams, who led the Mountaineers to the first of three-consecutive national championships in 2005, has been hired as a member of the athletics department staff and will support ASU’s offensive coaches in a non-coaching, quality-control capacity.

After helping lead Appalachian to a 21-16 win over Northern Iowa in the 2005 NCAA Division I-AA national title game and graduating from ASU with a bachelor’s degree in graphic arts and imaging technology, Williams spent much of the past four years north of the border as a quarterback in the Canadian Football League. He was a member of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats from 2006-08 and began this season with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers before returning to the states earlier this month.

The Camden, S.C. native held nearly every major school record for a quarterback at the conclusion of his collegiate career and remains ASU’s all-time leader in 16 passing categories, including career completions (589) and yards (7,759).
