Women's Tennis Posts Impressive Showing at Hokie Invitational

BLACKSBURG, VA.-Eight ASU women's tennis players participated in the Hokie Invitational over the weekend, and posted impressive outings against tough opponents Friday and Saturday.

In flight A singles, freshman Ellie Linsell had a quite impressive outing, as the England native posted a stout 3-1 record, earning two wins over Virginia Tech's top two players and a crushing win over a strong ETSU competitor.

In the ever-competitive top flight A singles, Linsell handed VT's Martha Blakely a thrilling 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(6) defeat before falling to SoCon foe Anna Milian of Elon.

She then went on to earn wins against Paula Jaime of ETSU, winning 6-3, 6-0 and beat Yasmin Hamza 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (7), to capture a fifth place finish.

Freshman Jennifer Ansari earned a solid win as well in the flight B singles, beating Sarah Abutovic of Winthrop 7-6. 6-0 before dropping her next match to DeAnna Bailey, 6-3, 6-3. Ansari then went on to face a tough Shannon Betts of Virginia Tech, losing in two close sets 7-5, 6-2.

Teammate Caroline Mauch fell to her competitor in first round flight B play, 6-1, 6-1, and then dropped a 6-2, 7-5 to Stephani Synn of Davidson before ending the invitational on a strong note, beating Livia Gherman, 6-2, 6-7, 1-0.

Olivia Stannard, Laura Janke and Amanda Cash all competed in flight C singles play, with Stannard advancing to the finals of the consolation bracket before falling to Katie Blow of Virginia Tech 6-0, 6-1. Cash dealt Aubrey Brooks a two set loss in first round play, before falling to Ali Gores of Davidson, 6-1, 6-1. Janke lost to Teresa Wang of Davidson 6-4, 6-4 and dropped her next match to Jessica Margolis. In the consolation bracket, Janke went on to defeat Katie Barnhill of Tennessee Tech.

Blakeley Bean and Gisela Fernandez played in the fligh D singles bracket, as both won their first matches before falling in the second round of the flight to their opponents. Bean then fell to Diana Woodcock of Tennessee Tech and defeated Emerald Lauzon, while Fernandez captured fifth place in the flight, beating Lauzon 6-1, 6-4 and Woodcock 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles action, the duo of Linsell and Stannard were defeated by ETSU 8-4, but then went on two run through two doubles flights,before being eliminated by Radford 8-5.

Fernandez and Mauch were also active in doubles play, losing to Radford 8-4 in their first match, and then lost again 8-1 to be eliminated from doubles play.

Cash and Janke played in teh flight b doubles, as the two lost in their first match 8-2, and fell to Elon in their second match. The duo of Ansari/Bean defeated Graybill/Margolis of Elon 8-6, but then lost their next match 8-1.

Appalachian continues with its fall schedule, as the Mountaineers return to action October 25 to compete at the ITA Invitational.
