Around the Mountain - October 15

DAVIDSON, N.C. - J.J. Elder scored the game-winner in the 54th minute to give Appalachian State University men’s soccer a 1-0 win over No. 21 Davidson Wednesday night in Davidson.

The win improves ASU to 4-7-1 overall and their first conference win of the season, are now at 1-3 in the SoCon, while the Wildcats drop to 9-3 overall and 2-2 in the SoCon and have dropped two-straight.

The win is the first ASU win over a nationally ranked team since a 4-3 win over No. 15 Furman in 1992.

After a scoreless first half, Nate Latigue sent Elder a touch pass that Elder finished to the near post for his third goal of the year. Elder has now scored in back-to-back games.

The match was even throughout, with Davidson holding a 4-3 shot advantage in the first half while ASU kept control in the second half, outshooting DC 8-5.

Davidson managed just three shots on goal, one just three minutes in by Yannick Pilgrim that Collin Taylor stopped, a shot in the 64th minute that an ASU defender was able to knock away and one in the 73rd minute by Charlie Reiter that Taylor knocked away.

ASU kept Reiter and Pilgrim, ranked numbers one and two in points in the SoCon, in check, allowing the duo just two shots apiece.
Sean Dreybus had five shots for the Mountaineers.

Taylor needed to make only two saves for his first shutout of the season while Chip Sanders made five stops for Davidson.

Three of four Southern Conference games Appalachian has played this season were 1-0 scores.
