Women's Soccer Ties Wofford, 1-1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Kaitlin Baker scored her first career collegiate goal to tie the score at one as Appalachian State University women’s soccer tied Wofford 1-1 Thursday night at Snyder Field.

After being outshot 5-3 in the first half, Appalachian (5-8-4, 2-4-3) kept control of the final 65 minutes, holding an 8-3 shot advantage over the Terriers.

The Terriers got on the board in the 49th minute when Anne Phillips got a pass from Sydney Reed to the center and put a shot in the top right of the goal from about 10 yards out.

The Mountaineers tied the score in the 71st minute on Baker’s first career goal.  Ruthie Lile started the play with a cross from the left side, after a scramble, Paige Morrow centered a pass to Baker in the center and she sent a shot over Wofford keeper Katie McChesney to tie the score.

Wofford (3-12-2, 2-5-2) had the first scoring chance in the game just two minutes in when Nikki Seibert took a shot from 10 yards out off the right side that was stopped by Caroline Clarke.

The Mountaineers’ didn’t have their first shot of the match until the 14th minute, when Taylor Dunlap’s shot went high.

Appalachian had another scoring opportunity in the 23rd minute when Morrow caught the Terrier’s goalkeeper creeping up, sent a high shot over her head that went just wide left.

In the 66th minute Baker took a shot from 15 yards out from the right side but McChesney was there to make the save.

In the 80th minute Nikki Seibert ripped a shot from just inside the box to the low left corner, but Clarke made a diving save to keep the score tied.

With just five seconds left in regulation, Baker had a good look from 15 yards out but her shot went just went left.

With less than a minute to go in the second overtime, Lile sent a cross pass from the right side that Baker just missed getting a shot on.

Clarke made five saves in goal for Appalachian while McChesney also made five saves for Wofford.

Baker led the Mountaineers with four shots while Nikki Seibert had six shots for Wofford.

Appalachian is back in action on Sunday when they travel to Furman for a 3 p.m. match.
