BOONE, N.C. -- Longwood's Andrea Bastiaanse broke a 1-1 tie 23 seconds into the second overtime, spoiling senior day ceremonies at Kidd Brewer Stadium Sunday and lifting the Lancers to a crucial NorPac win over Appalachian State.
Bastiaanse's goal ended what was easily the most entertaining contest of the 2009 season. Sunday's game was marked by physical play by both teams, spectacular work in goal, and high energy action from two teams determined to enter next week's NorPac Conference Tournament on a winning note.
Longwood's Christina Verhulst put the Mountaineers in an early 1-0 hole after taking a pass from Amanda Babineau on a two-on-one breakaway to beat ASU goalkeeper Denise Adams.
The second half was a defensive struggle, as both sides had difficulty advancing the ball in to the other team's half of the field until senior Kate Garnet broke through in the game's 61st minute. Garnet took a cross from freshman forward Lisa Charney and drilled a shot from the top of the box to knot the score at one.
The first overtime period was highlighted by strong defensive efforts by Mountaineer seniors Adams and Ashley Patterson.
Adams, who got the start in goal on her Senior Day over sophomore Bridgette Street, filled in admirably Sunday. The Aiea, Hawaii native posted 10 saves for the day including two brilliant stops in the first overtime to keep the Mountaineers in the game.
Later in the extra frame, Bastiaanse appeared to have an open net in front of her after sliding past Adams until Patterson swooped in at the last second to deflect her shot and send the game to a second overtime.
With both teams visibly exhausted in the second extra period, it took only 23 seconds for the Lancers to find a crease in the Mountaineer defense as Bastiaanse connected from 10 yards out to win the game.
Appalachian will return to action Thursday, traveling to Palo Alto, California where they will take on host Stanford in the first round of the NorPac Conference Tournament.
