Volleyball Continues Road Stint with Two Crucial SoCon North Matches

BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University volleyball looks to continue its winning ways this weekend as the Apps hit the road for two must-win SoCon North Division matches. The Mountaineers first face Samford, Saturday November 7 at 8 p.m.(EST) and then travel to Rock City to take on Chattanooga, Sunday November 8 at 2 p.m.

About the Apps: The Black and Gold are on a two match winning streak, having handed both College of Charleston and Western Carolina 3-1 defeats. In both contests sophomore Maggie Seeds has been a solid contributor as the North Carolina native tied a career-high in kills against the Cougars with 16 and posted 11 against the Catamounts.

Senior Becca Norris has a team-best hitting percentage at .281, putting her at eighth in the conference in the category. Offensively, Kasey Sauls has been strong as well, averaging 9.29 assists per set, ranking fifth in the SoCon.

On the defensive front Cassie Engelgau has led ASU's charge, averaging 4.42 digs per set, sitting at second in the conference in digs. At the net it has been all junior Caroline Sedon. The Ohio native is first in the league in blocks with 1.29 per set and 35th in the country in the category.

What's at Stake: In order to control their own fate Appalachain must win out to be one of the two teams from the north division to qualify for the SoCon Tournament. ASU is 2-8 on the road this season.

About the Bulldogs: Samford is 15-12 overall and and 9-4 in league action. The Bulldogs snapped a two match conference losing streak on November 1, eeking out a 3-2 win over UNCG. Samford's SoCon losses have come at the hands of Appalachian, College of Charleston, Furman and Elon.

The Bulldogs currently sit atop the SoCon North Division standings, one match ahead of Elon. Samford is also a stout 8-1 on their home floor with their lone loss coming to College of Charleston.

Allie Bettinger leads SU's offense, averaging 3.19 kills per set, while Alexis Bauer averages a team-best 3.51 digs per set.

At the net, Sheriden Stangohr averages 1.28 blocks per set, sitting right behind Sedon in the conference standings.

The Series: Samford will be looking for revenge against the Mountaineers, as the Apps evened the series at one all, defeating Samford in a 3-2 thriller in Boone back on October 11.

In the two team's first meeting ever back in 2008, Samford came away witha 3-1 victory on their home floor.

About the Mocs: Chattanooga holds the same overall record as the Mountaineers posting an 11-15 mark on the season, but is 3-10 in the SoCon and 3-8 on their home court.

UTC is on a six match losing streak, with their last win coming on October 18 in a 3-0 defeat of The Citadel.

Courtney Barnes leads the offense with 2.66 kils per set, while Paula Passmore anchors the defense averaging 5.39 digs per set.

The Series: During the first meeting of the season ASU downed the Lady Mocs, winning 3-0 in the High Country.

Appalachian holds the all-time series lead 33-21.

Up Next: Appalachian returns home for its final two regular-season matches of the 2009 campaign, starting with a contest against UNCG Wednesday November 7 at 7 p.m. in the Holmes Center.
