BOONE, N.C. - Basketball season returns to the High Country Friday night at 7 p.m. as the Appalachian State University men play host to UNC Wilmington in the season opener for both teams. The Mountaineers will have little time to rest following the showdown in the Holmes Center, as the squad travels to East Tennessee State Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Mountaineers, led by head coach Buzz Peterson, return 12 players from last season's squad and will have a busy first month of play to prepare for the Southern Conference slate. Following the busy weekend, the squad hosts Lees-McRae on Tuesday before taking to the road to square off with Arkansas and Louisville.
Both opening-weekend tilts find the Apps looking for a bit of revenge from 2008-09. In that season opener, ASU saw a late lead evaporate against UNCW in Trask Coliseum, ending with a 108-101 overtime setback. One month later, ETSU broke a halftime tie with a 19-point advantage in the second half to take an 89-70 win.
UNC Wilmington returns top players Chad Tomko, Johnny Wolf and Dominique Lacy from last year's squad. The trio accounted for 39.9 of the team's 71.2 points per game on the year and 13.3 of UNCW's 32.8 rebounds per game.
Reining Atlantic Sun champion ETSU returns nine players and two starters from last year's 23-11 squad. The Bucs are picked to finish fourth in the league this season and guard/forward Mike Smith earned preseason all-conference honors. Smith averaged 15.3 points and 7.7 boards last season.
ETSU has large shoes to fill with the departures of Courtney Pigrim and Kevin Tiggs, who accounted for 39.0 points per game last season.
