BOONE, N.C.- Coming off a thrilling 3-2 win over UNCG Wednesday evening in the Holmes Center, Appalachian State University volleyball returns to its home court for its regular season finale, hosting Elon, Saturday November 14 at 7 p.m. The match is a must-win contest for the Mountaineers, who are looking to earn the number two seed in the North Division and qualify for the SoCon Tournament.
About the Apps: ASU eeked out a narrow 3-2 victory over the Spartans in their last home contest on Wednesday. With the win, ASU improved to 13-16 overall and 9-6 in the SoCon and is just one win away from being one of four teams to earn a coveted SoCon Tournament berth.
In the win over UNCG, ASU was down 15-14 in fifth set action but final kills by Kelly Rhein and Maja Jechorek led the Apps to the 17-15 victory. In the match, Jechorek totaled a career-high 28 kills and 17 digs. Freshman Meghann Forshey was impressive as well, recording a career-high 18 kills. Also on the offensive front, Kasey Sauls was stout, posting a career-high 59 assists, and at the at net it was all junior Caroline Sedon with a career-high seven solo blocks and four block assists.
Overall on the season, Jechorek leads the Mountaineers with a total of 282 kills, averaging 2.64 per set putting her at 10th in the league in the category. Sauls ranks fifth in the conference with 9.48 assists per set, while senior Cassie Engelgau is second in the SoCon in digs averaging 4.46 per set. Sedon is 26th in the NCAA in blocks per set averaging 1.36 and sits atop the category in the conference.
What it Takes: Appalachian's motto is win and they are in the tournament. If the Apps can knock off Elon Saturday evening, they will qualify for the SoCon Tournament and take the number two seed out of the North Division.
About the Phoenix: Elon is a stout 23-6 on the season and 9-5 in league play. The Phoenix are on a two match winning streak, with their last loss coming in a 3-2 defeat to UNCG. Five of Elon's six losses have come in SoCon action, suffering defeats to College of Charleston 3-2, at Furman 3-0, at UNCG 3-2 and at Samford 3-2.
The Phoenix's top offensive player Traci Stewart is out for the rest of the season due to a season-ending injury, so Elon will have to rely on Caroline Lemke who averages 2.41 kills per set and Jessica Barrow who averages 2.21 kills per set, respectively. Lemke also averages a team-best 1.03 blocks per set.
On the defensive front, both Ali Deatsch and Lauren Copenhagen have been solid, averaging 3.78 and 2.18 digs per set.
The contest against ASU is also a must-win for the Phoenix who are vying for the number two seed in the North Division and a spot in the SoCon Tournament as well.
Senior Night: Appalachian will honor seniors Cassie Engelgau, Maja Jechorek and Becca Norris in a senior night presentation before Saturday's match.
Up Next: If ASU can capture a win, the Apps will head to Greenville, S.C. to take on host Furman in the first round of the 2009 SoCon Tournament.
