BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's soccer won their final four games of the season and finished with an 8-8-1 record for the 2009 campaign.

The Mountaineers did not win two-straight games until the end of October, when the Apps beat UNC Greensboro and Gardner-Webb. ASU carried the streak to their final two games, topping UNC Asheville 2-0 and Georgia Southern 1-0. During the streak ASU outscored their opponents 9-3.

The 2009 season was an up and down season that started on a high with a 10-0 win over Emory and Henry. ASU struggled in its next two games, falling to Radford and Liberty before getting back on track with a win over a tough Alabama A&M team and a 1-1 tie against NCAA tournament participant West Virginia.

The Black and Gold couldn't keep the momentum, however, after getting a 2-0 lead on Winthrop, ended up losing 3-2 and fell the next day to Cal State Bakersfield. Keeping with the up and down theme, Appalachian came back with a 3-0 win over Mercer before starting Southern Conference play.

ASU struggled to begin the SoCon slate, dropping their first three games but were able to come back and beat No. 21 ranked Davidson on a goal by J.J. Elder. With the win over the Wildcats, it marked ASU's first win over a top 25 team since beating Furman in 1992. Appalachian dropped their next game to College of Charleston but once again bounced back to end the season on a four game winning streak.

Senior Arie Muniz led the team in goals (6) and points (16) on the year and was one of just two seniors on the team. Freshmen Tyler Regan and Elder tied for second on the team with points apiece. Elder came on strong to end the season, scoring four of his five goals after October 11.

Despite not making the conference tournament, ASU put four players on the all-Southern Conference team for the second-straight season. Muniz was named to the first-team for the second year in a row while Elder, David Dodge and Kojo Thompson were all named to the all-freshman team.

Head coach Shaun Pendleton recorded a personal milestone, recording his 21st straight non-losing season.

The Mountaineers lose only two seniors, Muniz and Kenny Orelaja, from the 2009 squad, a team that featured 18 freshmen and sophomores.
