BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State's Whitney Smyre and Malcolm Styers have been selected SoCon Track and Field Athletes of the Week by the conference's coaches, the league announced Thursday.

Both athletes opened 2010 with a bang, taking home first place finishes in the weight throw at last Friday's Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill. Smyre also claimed top honors in the shot put.

Smyre, a senior from Stony Point, N.C. is the reigning SoCon Indoor champion in both the weight throw and shot put, and her 09-10 marks of 56-0 and 44-6.75 are currently tops in the league in both categories.

Styers placed first in the weight throw with a toss of 56-6 and also placed fifth in the shot put with a distance of 47-7. The Newton, N.C. junior is also the reigning SoCon Indoor champion in both the weight throw and shot put, and currently leads the league in both categories as well.

Appalachian State track and field will be back in action Friday, as they host the Appalachian Open at the Holmes Center in Boone. Log on to GoASU.com for full results from the Appalachian Open and all the latest in Mountaineer Athletics.
