Purcell, Taylor Named SoCon Athletes of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State freshman Alex Taylor and teammate Darius Purcell have been selected as the Southern Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for all meets January 14-16. The selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.

A native of Charlotte, N.C., Taylor won the 800m at the Appalachian Open with a time of 1:55.83. He currently ranks second in the league in the event. Taylor’s performance also set a Holmes Center Record in the 800m by an ASU athlete.

Purcell, a sophomore from Fayetteville, N.C., took first place in the high jump at the Appalachian Open with a leap of 6-10.25. His distance is the fourth best in Mountaineers’ history and currently ranks first in the conference.

Appalachian State returns to action Friday when it travels to Johnson City, Tenn., for East Tennessee State’s Niswonger Invitational.
