JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Appalachian State men's track and field returned to
action Friday, taking part in East Tennessee State’s annual Niswonger
Invitational.
The Niswonger Invitational showcases some of the world’s top collegiate, post
collegiate, and professional athletes with over 1,500 athletes from 75 teams
competing in the two-day event.
Despite the stiff
competition, several Appalachian athletes enjoyed stellar individual
performances Friday, with season and personal best marks being set by multiple
Mountaineers.
Trey Jones (8.27) and Matt Boruff (8.37) both established new personal
bests in the 60m hurdles. Jones’ time ranks as the sixth fastest in ASU
history, while Boruff’s new mark moves him from ninth to eighth in the
Appalachian record book.
John Svoboda’s time of 50.24 was the top
Mountaineer performance in the 400m, but the Kernersville native fell just
short of qualifying for tomorrow’s finals. Senior Nick Zeller turned in a time of 50.42 in the
400m, just .12 seconds off his season-best, but alsocame up just short of
qualifying for the finals.
In the 200m, Svoboda was also the
top Mountaineer finisher after posting a season-best time of 22.27. Freshman Landon Powell also set a new season-best mark,
