SPARTANBURG, S.C.- After a week break, Appalachian State University women's basketball returns to action, and looks to win its fourth straight as the Mountaineers head to South Carolina to battle Southern Conference foe Wofford, Saturday January 30. The contest is slated to begin at 7 p.m. in the Terrier's Benjamin Johnson Arena.
About the Apps: The Mountaineers, winners of three straight, matching their longest winning streak of the season, are coming off an impressive 11 point victory over Davidson. Despite holding a 10 point lead with six minutes remaining, Davidson continued to chip away and came within as close as three points. However, made free throws down the stretch iced the game for the Mountaineers, as Sam Ramirez, Catherine Williams and Canesha Edwards all converted at the charity stripe.
In a contest that saw offensive production from all over, junior Sam Ramirez tallied a game-high 17 points while sophomore Catherine Williams earned her first double-double of her career with 11 points and 11 boards. Williams also tied the single-game record in blocks, swatting eight Davidson shots.
The win also marked Appalachian’s tenth of the season, giving the Apps one more overall win than a season ago (9-22). It also put ASU in sole possession of fifth place in the conference standings.
Overall, freshman Ashlen Dewart averages a team-best 15.3 points per game, while Ramirez pours in 11.5 points per contest. Ramirez is also shooting a stout 35 percent from behind the arc. On the glass, Anna Freeman hauls in a team-high 8.4 rebounds per game, while Dewart has been strong on the rebounding front as well, grabbing an average of 6.1.
Tracking the Terriers: Wofford is 4-15 on the season including holding a 2-9 SoCon mark. The Terriers are coming off a dominating 89-35 victory against Southern Virginia. Wofford’s last conference win of the season came back on January 18, as the Terriers handed Elon a 61-60 loss in overtime.
WC’s other lone SoCon win of the season came on January 8, beating UNC Greensboro 61-60 as well. Two of the Terrier’s four wins on the season have coming in overtime, with Wofford earning its first win of the season on November 18 against Norkfolk State, picking up a 77-75 victory in OT.
Wofford is just 3-3 against opponents at home this season and 1-3 against SoCon foes on their home floor.
Mahagony Williams leads Wofford offensively, averaging 11.2 points per game, as she is the lone Terrier averaging double-figure scoring. Williams is also the team-leader on the glass, hauling in a team-best 7.9 rebounds per game.
The Terriers are eighth in the conference in field goal percentage and ninth in three point field goal percentage.

The Mountaineers have currently won four straight against Wofford, with the last loss to the Terriers coming back on February 12, 2007 falling 63-52 on Wofford’s home court. That was the last season (2006-07) that Wofford swept the season series as well.
Appalachian’s longest winning streak in the series is five games, done twice. Wofford’s longest winning streak is four games, spanning from the 2000-01 season to the 2001-02 campaign.
