DAVIDSON, N.C. - ASU senior Alex Markov improved his winning streak to five doubles and five singles matches, as Appalachian State University men's tennis defeated Southern Conference rival Davidson, 5-2, at Covington Tennis Courts on Sunday.
The Mountaineers (8-5, 2-1 SoCon) have now won four of their last five matches, while the Wildcats (6-9, 2-3 SoCon) see their two-match winning streak snapped.
Markov and partner Alain Humblet routed their opponents in the No. 2 doubles match, 8-1, while senior Steve Karendal and junior Andrew McKinnon achieved the same margin of victory in their No. 3 match to take the doubles point.
Davidson's Joe Schafer and Calum Gee won the top doubles match, 8-6.
In No. 1 singles action, Schafer hung with Markov in the second set, but the Mountaineer pulled out a 6-2, 7-5 victory.
ASU's Sebastien King also managed a two-set victory, earning a 6-3, 6-4 win in the No. 4 match. Appalachian State's No. 2 player, senior Philip Kloc, dropped his first set but rebounded to score a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory.
In the No. 3 match, Humblet picked up the first-set win but saw his Davidson opponent level the score in the second. Humblet regained momentum in the decisive set and won 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 for Appalachian's fifth point.
Davidson redeemed the outing with three-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 to stave off the shutout and solidify a 5-2 finish.
Appalachian continues with a road trip at Elon on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. before the Apps return home for the first time in eight matches when they host The Citadel on Thursday at 2 p.m.
