SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State University's Alex Markov has been named the Southern Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for all matches March 19-25. Markov went 6-0 combined in singles and doubles play as the Mountaineers were 2-1 last week. After suffering a 4-3 loss to Charlotte to open the week, ASU responded with league wins over Georgia Southern (7-0) and Davidson (5-2). Markov joins teammates Sebastien King and Alain Humblet as the third Mountaineer to earn the weekly award.
Competing at No. 1 singles, Markov earned three straight-set wins last week. The Pernik, Bulgaria native raced past Charlotte's Jack Williams, 6-3, 6-0. Markov then came away with conference victories over Georgia Southern's Alain Garrido (6-3, 6-1) and Davidson's Joe Schafer (6-2, 7-5) to run his winning streak to five matches.
Paired with Humblet, the ASU tandem earned three wins to improve their record to 8-1 on the season. Markov and Humblet held off Charlotte's Anthony Davison and Paul Cisti, 8-6, before beating GSU's Kyle Hoffman and Daniel Rush, 8-5. The ASU pair closed the week with an 8-1 win over Davidson's Kevin Moore and Robert Lightbourn.
The Mountaineers are slated for three SoCon matches this week, beginning with a road test against Elon on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. before returning to Boone to host The Citadel on Thursday at 2 p.m. in their first home match in over a month. The week concludes with a Saturday visit to UNCG at noon.
