Appalachian (11-6, 4-2 SoCon) found success in its last road match of the season, posting a final 7-6 mark on the road, while Presbyterian (11-12, 1-3 Big South) slips below .500 after dropping its final home match.
In doubles action, ASU junior Zeke Sansing and senior Steve Karendal were first to finish with an 8-5 win in the No. 3 spot, but Presbyterian responded with an 8-6 win in the No. 1 position.
Appalachian seniors Alex Markov and Alain Humblet fought to an 8-8 tie in the No. 2 match before prevailing in a tiebreaker to win the team point, 9-8.
In singles, Presbyterian quickly evened the score at 1-1 by stealing the No. 6 match, 6-1, 6-1.
Appalachian's No. 2, senior Philip Kloc, regained the Mountaineer lead with his 6-1, 6-2 win, while classmate Karendal soon followed with a 7-5, 6-0 score in the No. 5 match, giving the Black and Gold a 3-1 lead.
The match-clinching point came from top individual Markov, who controlled his No. 1 duel from wire to wire, notching a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
ASU's No. 4 player, sophomore Sebastien King pulled out a 7-5 opening set and needed a tiebreaker in the latter of a 7-5, 7-6, two-setter. Humblet closed out the match with a tight 6-4, 7-6, finish at No. 3 singles.
The Mountaineers return to Boone to complete their season with four matches on their home courts. Appalachian hosts Wofford on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. before taking on Chattanooga on Saturday at 2 p.m. The season concludes with matches against the Southern Conference's top two teams, Furman and College of Charleston, next week.
