SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Appalachian State University quarterback Jamal Jackson, who ranks among the nation’s top 25 in five different statistical categories through the first month of the season, has been named the Southern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Month for September, the SoCon office announced on Thursday.
Jackson, a junior from Atlanta, Ga., completed 108-of-163 passes (66.3 percent) for 1,277 yards and eight touchdowns over the first five games of the season and ran 52 times for 233 yards (4.5 ypr) and three scores. His 1,510 yards of total offense (302.2 ypg) lead the SoCon and rank eighth nationally. He also leads the SoCon and ranks 11th nationally in passing yards, is second in the league and 22nd nationally in both completions and points responsible for (66) and ranks third in the conference and 23rd nationally with a 143.35 pass-efficiency rating.
Jackson recorded the 40th 300-yard passing game in Appalachian State history when he threw for 300 yards in the Sept. 1 season opener at East Carolina and on Sept. 22 at Chattanooga, became only the 13th 3,000-yard passer in school history when he topped the 3,000-yard mark in just the 11th start of his career. He was named the SoCon and national Offensive Player of the Week after amassing 325 yards of total offense (260 passing, 65 rushing) and accounting for three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) in the Mountaineers’ 35-27 win over Montana on Sept. 8.
The monthly SoCon honor is the first of Jackson’s career.
Jackson and the Mountaineers (3-2, 1-1 SoCon) return to conference play on Saturday when they host Elon (2-3, 0-2 SoCon) for homecoming at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
