Headlining Appalachian State’s eight honorees is wide receiver Sean Price, who was named College Sports Journal’s co-Freshman of the Year, as well as an all-American and freshman all-American.
In just 10 games as a redshirt freshman, Price caught 81 passes for 1,196 yards and eight touchdowns in 2012, shattering the FCS freshman records for receptions (71, set by Cal State Northridge’s Drew Amerson in 1999) and receiving yards (1,073, set by Marshall’s Randy Moss in 1996). Price’s 7.1 receptions and 119.6 yards per game both ranked sixth nationally last season, regardless of class.
The College Sports Journal honors are the latest in a long list of accolades for Price, who was previously named all-America by The Sports Network, placed third in voting for the Jerry Rice Award (FCS Freshman of the Year) and was one of two runners-up for the College Sporting News Freshman of the Year award. Price was also named Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and was a first-team all-conference selection by the league’s coaches and media.
In addition to Price, senior linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough and senior punter Sam Martin were also recognized on College Sports Journal’s 63-member all-America team. Senior cornerback Demetrius McCray and senior running back Steven Miller were among 72 players to receive honorable-mention recognition.
Joining Price on College Sports Journal’s 63-member freshman all-America team were Appalachian State offensive lineman Shaq Counts, defensive lineman Davante Harris and wide receiver Malachi Jones.
