WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. - Appalachian State women's tennis served George Mason University a 7-0 victory on Saturday on day one of a three day tournament.
Mountaineer duo Ellie Linsell and McKenie LaSure defeated GMU's Kiersten Pappas and Brittany Pilkington in the No. 1 doubles match (8-2), along with Jennifer Ansari and Clare Cox, who defeated Maya Hicks and E. Erdenebat who also recorded an 8-2 victory at the No. 2 position. In the No. 3 spot, Mountaineers Jessica Thaggard and Gabby Gabriel fell to E. Desiatnikova and Ashley Delaney in a 8-6 set.
App State swept through singles action, beginning with LInsell, who defeated Pilkington at No. 1 (6-3, 6-2). Cox handed Hicks a loss in at the No. 2 spot (6-1, 6-1), along with Ansari, who played past Delaney at No. 3 (6-2, 6-0).
Rounding out singles action against the Patriots were newcomer Brianna Amerllino, who won No. 4 singles over Kiersten Pappas (6-0, 6-3), and Thaggard who took the No. 5 match against E. Erdenebat (6-1, 6-0). Gabriela Celi locked down the sweep for the Mountaineers with her No. 6 victory over E. Desiatnikova (6-0, 7-5).
The Mountaineers continue play in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. as they face Liberty at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
