Boston, the active leader in wins on the roster, posted his first pin of the season over Chattanooga's Marvin Lewis just 46 seconds into the opening period. The preseason all-conference selection is now 7-11 on the season at 133 pounds.
"Hats off to Boston, he came ready to fight," head coach JohnMark Bentley said. "I was so proud of him and it was exciting to see that."
The momentum Boston provided could not carry itself throughout the Appalachian lineup, as the Mountaineers failed to find the scoreboard until the 184-pound bout. Sophomore Jake Johnson claimed his fourth victory of the season fighting all the way till the end of a 7-6 decision in the first tiebreak over Sean Mappes.
The Mocs proved to be too much, as Josh Condon paced the UTC scoring with a pin over Appalachian's Zack Strickland at 165 pounds. For Strickland, it was his first loss in a dual this season and snaps a five-bout winning streak.
"We knew it was going to be a tough match and we knew that if we had a chance to win, we would have brought the fight," Bentley said. "We just have to get back into practices, get better and prepare for the rest of our Southern Conference matches."
The Mountaineers will be on the road for the rest of the season, starting their road trip on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Virginia. The dual is slated for 1 p.m.

BOUT-BY-BOUT
125: Soto MD Parisi, 10-2
In a rematch from
the Hokie Open, Soto kept Parisi from earning a takedown and racked up a 3:50
in riding time, earning a 10-2 major decision. Soto was able to tally three
takedowns and two near fall points to grab his second win over Parisi this
season.
133: Boston pinned Lopez
Boston made his
senior day a memorable one, quickly earning a takedown 27 seconds into the
opening period. Lopez was unable to find any offense, as Boston flipped him
over and earned the first period pin.
141: Pavlou MD Johnson
Pavlou got on the
scoreboard a minute into the match with a takedown, and continued to add
pressure, adding another takedown and two near fall points. Pavlou continued to
accumulate points in the second period with a reversal and a takedown, taking a
10-2 lead into the final period. Johnson climbed his way back into the bout, earning
an escape and a point for misconduct on Pavlou. With two seconds remaining in
the final period, Pavlou got a final takedown for the 13-4 major decision.
149: Hudson D Kechter
After two minutes
of scoreless action, Hudson broke the deadlock with a takedown, and held the
2-0 lead into the second period. Hudson added an escape four seconds into the
second period and accumulated enough riding time for the fourth and final point
in the third period.
157: Stavrum D Scott
In what looked to
a scoreless first period, Stavrum posted a late takedown to take a 2-0 lead
into the second period. The wrestlers were unable to find points in the next
two minutes, but Stavrum clinched the decision in the final period with an
early reversal and the riding time point for the 5-0 win.
165: Condon
pinned Strickland
In a rematch from
the Southern Scuffle, the 165-pound bout was one the hardest-fought matches of
the afternoon. Condon found the advantage early, earning a takedown and a 2-1
lead heading into the second period. After Strickland earned an escape, Condon
added another takedown to bring the score to 4-2. Strickland responded with his
third escape of the bout, plus a late takedown, taking a 5-4 lead into the
third period. Condon was unable to escape Strickland to even the score and
continued his pressure by getting his third takedown. With 1:05 left, Condon
was able to flip the redshirt freshman and nab the rare pin on Strickland.
174: Mappes D Hedash
Mappes recorded a
takedown in each period and held Hedash to just two escape points for the 7-2
decision. For Hedash, it was his first loss in a conference dual this season.
184: Johnson D Prigmore (TB-2)
After the
wrestlers found themselves tied at 5-5 after seven minutes, they went into the
sudden-victory period. Neither wrestler could not find any points, so the bout
moved into the tie-breaker periods. In the first tie-breaker period, Prigmore
earned an escape and took a 6-5 lead. In the second period, Johnson looked to
be out of the bout, but a second stall was called on Prigmore, giving Johnson a
point to send the bout into the second sudden-victory round.
After 30 seconds of no scoring, the bout went into the second round of tie-breaker periods. In the opening period, Johnson claimed the needed-escape and held onto the 7-6 lead in the second tie-breaker period for the decision.
197: Brown D Weiss
After two periods
without any scoring, Brown earned an escape eight seconds into the bout. A
takedown with 32 seconds left, plus the riding time point gave Brown the 4-0
decision.
285: Malone D Cummings
After a scoreless
three minutes, Malone escaped Cummings to take a 1-0 lead into the final
period. Malone put the bout out of reach, tallying a three-point near fall and
the riding time point.
