Nine Track and Field Athletes Head to Greensboro for NCAA East Regional

BOONE, N.C.- Nine Appalachian State University track and field athletes continue their 2008-09 campaigns this weekend, as three male athletes and six female athletes head to Greensboro, N.C. to compete at the 2009 NCAA East Regional. Regional competition begins Friday May 29 and concludes on May 30 and will take place at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

On the women's side, six Apps will compete at a chance to go to the NCAA National Championships. Sophomore Rebecca Hazeltine will be making her first trip to regionals, earning a qualifying mark at the Sea Ray Relays in the high jump, jumping a personal best 5-8.75. Her leap also put her at third on ASU's all-time list in the event. Senior Jen Povick will be competing for the first time in her career with the Black and Gold as well, as the West Virginia native qualified in the 800m run at the Duke Twilight and then improved on her personal best time at the Georgia Tech Invite, running the event in 2:08.20.

Junior Whitney Smyre and senior Shea Snow will making appearances as well, with Smyre set to compete in the hammer throw and Snow the pole vault. Both are headed to regionals virtue of their SoCon outdoor title in their respective events. Lily Tallent will be vying for a spot at nationals in three events, as the senior will be competing in the shot put, javelin and discus, she captured SoCon crown's in all three events.

Rounding out the women's side, junior Danielle Thorpe earned her qualifying mark in the triple jump at the SoCon Championships, leaping a new personal best of 42-1.5, and winning the triple jump title. Thorpe currently ranks 29th in the nation in the event.

Three Mountaineer men will be making the trip to Greensboro. Sophomores Jerod Gardner and Tim Daly both are competing in throwing events, Gardner in the shot put and Daly in the hammer. Gardner won the shot put title at the SoCon Outdoor Championships, while Daly notched a qualifying mark at the Beach vs Mountains meet with a toss of 191-2 and followed up that performance with his second best throw of the season at the Georgia Tech Invitational with a throw of 187-7.

Senior Mark Sturgis will be competing at regionals in the triple jump for the third time in his career, as the Woodleaf, N.C. native grabbed a regional mark at the first meet of the year with a jump of 50-00.50 and then again at the SoCon championships tying his personal best jump of 50-1.25. He also captured the SoCon Outdoor title in the triple jump, the second in his career.

In order to automatically advance to the NCAA Championships, an athlete must place in the top five their respective events.
