SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State University wrestler
Kyle Blevins became the second-straight Mountaineer to be named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all matches from Jan. 20-27, the conference office announced Thursday.
Austin Trotman won the award the week before for ASU.
A sophomore, Blevins went 3-0 on the week with two major decisions. He started the week with the two major decisions on the same day, beating NC State’s Ray Ward 10-2 and Gardner-Webb’s Daved Pelsang 18-4. He ended the week with a 3-1 decision over The Citadel’s Pierre Frazille and helped ASU beat the Bulldogs 21-16. As a team, ASU won all three matches.
Blevins leads Appalachian with 18 wins on the season and also leads with seven major decisions, four have of them have come during his current eight-match winning streak.
Blevins and Trotman are the first ASU teammates to win the award in consecutive weeks since the 2000-01 season when Travis Drake and P.J. Boccia won the award back-to-back.
The Mountaineers are back in action this weekend as they host the first ever Appalachian Open on Saturday, Jan. 30 starting at 9 a.m.
