SUNSET BEACH, N.C. - Brooke DeHart shot a team-best 73 (+1) on Friday to tie for sixth place overall and help Appalachian State University women's golf into fifth place after one round at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate.
Jordan Kreuter was one stroke back at 74 to tie for ninth, while
Kerri Dice carded a 77 (+5) for 24th place.
Kristina Boo shot an 81 to stand in 38th place and fellow newcomer Mimi Burke finished the day 11 over par at 83, good for 41st place.
Western Carolina had four golfers finish the day in the top 15 to earn the top spot and a one-stroke advantage with a score of 293.
Southern Conference rival Samford stands second, just one stroke back, while host Elon is in fourth place, just one stroke ahead of the Mountaineers, at 304.
The second round begins Saturday morning and the third and final round is set for Sunday.
