PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Appalachian State field hockey's season came to a close Friday, as the Mountaineers fell 7-2 to Pacific in a consolation round game in the NorPac Conference Tournament.

The Tigers drew first blood in the 13th minute, as senior midfielder Kim Keyawa beat Mountaineer goalkeeper Bridgette Street to put the Apps in an early 1-0 hole.

The two teams traded blows for the better part of the first half, until freshman forward Lisa Charney connected in the 31st minute off a pass from Jenn Heiss to knot the score at 1-1. Charney's goal was her fifth of the season, the most for a Mountaineer freshman in coach Brandi Alexander's tenure at Appalachian.

It appeared the two teams would head to intermission in a dead heat until Pacific's Robin Nelson scored in the 34th minute to push the Tiger lead to 2-1 as the teams went to the break.

A second half offensive onslaught would break the game wide open for Pacific after the Tigers' Katy McDonough struck in th 42nd minute to stretch the lead to 3-1. McDonough's goal was followed up by Kiddy Leubane's goal in the 57th minute after rebounding an Emily Trudeau miss. Pacific then added two goals in the 61st minute, the first by Trudeau of an assist from Keyawa and the second coming as Keyawa converted a Leubane pass for her second goal of the game.

Keyawa would eventually complete the hat trick in the 65th minute, taking a pass from Leubane to push the margin to 7-1. Appalachian's Katie Price closed the scoring in the 70th minute, connecting for the first time this season to bring the final tally to 7-2.

As was the case in their first round loss Thursday to Stanford, the Mountaineer offense failed to gain traction against a stingy defense and lost the shots on goal battle by a margin of 19-10.

Appalachian ends the 2009 season with an overall record of 6-15, the most victories the Mountaineers have tallied in a season since 2004. Six wins also marks the highest total since Alexander took over the program in 2006.
