SPARTANBURG, S.C.- Appalachian State University volleyball outside hitter Maja Jechorek was named the Southern Conference's Player of the Week announced the league office Monday afternoon. The award is the first for Jechorek in her career and is the first for ASU since standout Brittany Zahn picked up the honor back on October 22, 2007.
The Poland native posted two impressive performances against SoCon North Division foes UNCG and Elon helping the Mountaineers gain crucial wins in both contests.
Against UNCG, the senior slammed home the match winning-kill, giving ASU the 17-15 fifth set victory. She also anchored the Black and Gold's offense, tallying both a career and match-high 28 kills against the Spartans. The 28 kills tied Jechorek for ninth on the individual match records list in the category. She also matched a career-high 17 digs against UNCG.
In the match to clinch the number two seed in the north division and earn a spot in the 2009 Southern Conference tournament, Jechorek came up big once again. She tied for a team and match-best 17 kills to go along with 12 digs and one solo block in the Apps 3-2 thrilling win over Elon.
The Mountaineers, winners of three straight and five of their past six matches look to carry their impressive play into the 2009 SoCon Tournament, as they take on number one seed and undefeated in SoCon play, Furman in Greenville, S.C., Saturday November 21 at Noon.
