BOONE, N.C. -- Appalachian State men's cross country will close its 2009 campaign ranked 11th in the Southeast Region, the USTFCCA announced Tuesday.
The Mountaineers wrapped up their '09 slate with an 11th place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional Meet in Louisville, Ky. last Saturday. Appalachian was led by senior Phil Mitchell, who placed 31st overall with a new personal best time of 31:23 on the 10K course. Sophomore Sean Soderman was the next highest finisher, turning in a time of 32:02 to place 53rd. Seniors Alec Meyer (79th overall, 32:36) and Josh Houser (89th overall, 32:46) also took home top-100 finishes for the Mountaineers.
The 2009 season also saw the Mountaineers claim their fifth straight Southern Conference title. Appalachian was sparked by first-team all-conference performances from Mitchell (fourth overall), Soderman (sixth overall), and Meyer (seventh overall) en route to their eighth title in the past 10 years. Head coach Mike Curcio was also named SoCon Coach of the Year for the eighth time in his career.
The Mountaineers will now turn their attention to track and field, with the indoor season scheduled to kick off December 5 with ASU hosting the Appalachian Invitational at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone.
