Men's Track Has Strong Performance at Liberty Open

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Appalachian State men's track closed out another successful meet Saturday, with seven Mountaineers establishing new season-best marks at the Liberty Open.

Freshman Landon Powell had another strong outing for the Mountaineers this weekend, placing third in the 60m dash with a time of 6.96 and fifth in the 200m dash. Powell was joined in the top-eight of the 60 classmate TJ Lockard who finished fifth with a season-best time of 7.00 and senior John Svoboda (7.11, 8th place).

Svoboda took home a first place finish in the 200m with a time of 22.41, and was joined in the top-eight by Powell, freshman Justin Thomas (23.56, 7th place) and Lockard (23.62, 8th place).

Freshman Tyler Combs earned a fifth place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 52.85, and sophomore AJ Dohanic added a sixth place finish in the 500m dash.

Senior Matt Boruff took home fourth place finishes in the 60m hurdles and the high jump for the Apps Saturday. Boruff was joined in the 60m hurdle finals by teammate Philip Bush, who earned an eighth place finish with a time of 8.74. Bush also claimed a sixth place finish in the long jump with a 21-10 leap.

Patrick Morgan narrowly missed out on setting a new school record in the 1000m run Saturday. Morgan, who joined the Apps as a graduate student this season, turned in a first place time of 2:27.77 that fell just .13 seconds short of Todd Goewey's 1985 mark of 2:27.64. Brandon Hudgins took home second place in the 1000m with a time of 2:29.44 that ranks third all-time at ASU.

Distance standouts Josh Houser (4:20.09) and Bud Galloway (4:21.66) took home fourth and fifth place finishes in the mile for the Mountaineers Saturday.

Freshman Michael Lilley led a trio of Mountaineers in the 3000m run with a season-best time of 8:45.07 to earn a fourth place finish. Sophomore Mason Campbell followed closely behind with a personal-best mark of 8:47.55 to finish fifth, and freshman Will Raby claimed sixth with a season-best 8:48.69.

Sophomore Darius Purcell led the App high jumpers with a personal best mark of 6-10.75 en route to a second place finish. Purcell was joined in the top five by Matt Boruff (6-4.75, 4th place) and freshmen Colin Reber and Brad Triplett who tied for fifth with leaps of 6-2.75.

Sophomore Jack Bell and junior Ryan Twiford tied for third in the pole vault with a 14-3.25 mark.

Junior Malcolm Styers led the Mountaineer throwing contingency again Saturday, taking home a first place finish in the weight throw and a second place finish in the shot put. Styers was joined in the top-five of the weight throw by junior Tim Daly (52-08.25, 4th place) and sophomore Jared Stalling (52-02, 5th place). In the shot put, junior Jerod Gardner claimed third with a 49-06.50 toss and Stalling took home seventh place with a season-best throw of 47-06.50.

Appalachian State track and field will enjoy a weekend off, before returning to action February 12-13 at the Akron Invitational at Akron, Ohio.
