LYNCHBURG, Va. - Appalachian State women's track and field had a successful trip to the Liberty Open, with nine season-best marks bettered over the course of the two-day meet.
Senior Ashley McKiver was among the top Mountaineer performers in Lynchburg, establishing new season-best times in both the 60m and 200m dash. The High Point native took home first place in the 60m with a time of 7.75 and second place in the 200m after posting a 25.76. McKiver was followed closely by junior Kiara Crutchfield, who placed third with a time of 26.02.
Crutchfield also took home a second place finish in the 60m hurdles Saturday after turning in a season-best time of 8.96. Crutchfield's time is also the top performance by a Mountaineer athlete in the 60m hurdles in the 2009-10 season. Crutchfield was followed closely by junior Michelle Brutus who claimed a third place finish with a season- best time of 9.11.
Three Mountaineers placed in the top-five of the 400m dash Saturday, led by senior Lynda Hiller. Hiller claimed a third place finish after posting a season-best time of 60.56. She was joined in the top-five by classmate Nadia Liriano (61.04, 4th place) and freshman D'Shawrna McLucas (61.23, 5th place).
For the first time this season, Appalachian got a chance to compete in the 500m dash and it proved to be a welcome change of pace for the Mountaineers. ASU placed three athletes in the top-five led by freshmen Shenita Martin who placed third with a time of 1:21.87. Martin was followed by Michelle Brutus (1:24.10, 4th place) and sophomore Naadia Crutchfield ( 1:24.52, 5th place).
Crutchfield, who was the lone Mountaineer to participate in Friday's pentathlon, turned in a solid fourth place finish with a total of 2835 points. This weekend's meet was also the first time this season that the Apps have competed in a scored pentathlon.
Senior Hannah Parks set a new team mark in the mile run for the 2009-10 indoor season. Parks posted a time of 5:06.48 to earn a second place finish. Freshman Trinity Foreman was close behind in third place with a season-best time of 5:09.99 and junior Dani Reese took home sixth place honors with a time of 5:21.23.
In the 3000m run, sophomore Kelsey Hanger earned a sixth place finish with a time of 10:31.04 to establish a new season best. Freshman Sarah Williamson also turned in a season-best mark of 10:43.42 to finish seventh.
Junior Rebecca Hazeltine earned a first place finish for the Mountaineers in the high jump Saturday. The Weddington, N.C. native took home the top spot with a mark of 5-5. Teammates Julie Ward (5-3, 2nd place) and Bridgette Hills (5-1, 7th place) also turned in strong performances in the high jump for ASU as well.
Ward also had a solid showing in the pole vault, finishing in a first-place tie with teammate Ashley Beale after both Mountaineers cleared 11-5.75. Freshman Meredith Wilson finished in a third-place tie after clearing 10-11.75 to match her season-best.
A trio of Mountaineers earned top-five finishes in the long jump led by Kiara Crutchfield who took home second place with a mark of 18-2.25. She was joined in the top-five by junior Bianca Harvey (17-11.75, 4th place) and senior Danielle Thorpe who placed fifth after posting a season-best mark of 17-10.75.
Thorpe also took home first place in the triple jump with a 38-02.75 mark and was joined by Harvey who placed sixth with a 36-07 distance.
In the throwing events, freshman Gayshawna Watkins stepped up in the absence of Whitney Smyre to earn a first place finish in the shot put with a toss of 40-10.25. The Forest City, N.C. native followed up her shot put performance with a fifth place in the weight throw.
Appalachian State track and field will enjoy a weekend off, before returning to action February 12-13 at the Akron Invitational at Akron, Ohio.
