ASU Athletics, Reich College of Education Unveil Mountaineer Summer Reading Program

April 25, 2007 - BOONE, N.C. -- Appalachian State University athletics has teamed up with ASU’s Reich College of Education to create the Mountaineer Summer Reading Program. The program supports and encourages literacy among first- through eighth-grade students in the ASU Public School Partnership (which includes districts in Alexander, Allegheny, Ashe, Avery, Burke, Caldwell, Watauga and Wilkes counties).

The Mountaineer Summer Reading Program rewards students for meeting goals based on the number of books they read during their summer break.

Rewards include:

FOR THE SUMMER’S TOP READERS
Exclusive tailgate party and other prizes in conjunction with Appalachian’s Oct. 20 home football game at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

FOR THE NO. 1 READER AT EACH GRADE LEVEL IN EVERY PARTICIPATING COUNTY
Pregame picnic and locker room tour prior to a Mountaineer football home game this fall. Winners will also receive a special gift from ASU athletics and recognition on the Kidd Brewer Stadium videoboard during the game.

FOR THE TOP THREE READERS IN EACH DISTRICT
Football autographed by the 2007 Mountaineers.

FOR THE TOP READING CLASS IN EACH PARTICIPATING COUNTY
Class pizza party.

FOR THE SCHOOL IN EACH DISTRICT WITH THE HIGHEST RATE OF PARTICIPATION
$300 prize for use by the school’s library.

All 12,000 students in the 37 participating schools will receive a also bookmark and voucher to see the two-time-defending NCAA Division I national champions play at The Rock this fall.

To encourage students to participate in the Mountaineer Summer Reading Program, Appalachian student-athletes will join Yosef in visits to participating schools throughout the rest of the school year.
