by Appalachian Sports Information September 9, 2007 - BOONE, N.C. -- Thanks to a new policy that makes all Division I teams eligible to receive votes in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, Appalachian State University was listed on four ballots and received 19 points in voting for this week’s poll on Sunday. Appalachian (2-0) is 33rd in overall voting for this week’s poll, seven points ahead of Cincinnati and just four points behind Auburn. Others listed behind ASU in the “others receiving votes” column include Florida State (two points), Iowa, Kansas and Purdue (one point each). The Mountaineers became the talk of college football following their 34-32 win over Michigan on Sept. 1, prompting the AP to change its policy which previously allowed voters to include only Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS - formerly Division I-A) teams on their ballots. The new policy has been dubbed the “Appalachian State Rule” by some. Appalachian, the unanimous No. 1-ranked team in both of the major Division I FCS (Football Championship Subdivision - formerly Division I-AA), scored touchdowns on each of its first five possessions and led 38-0 midway through the second quarter of its 48-7 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday. ASU returns to action next Saturday (Sept. 15) when it hosts Northern Arizona at 3:30 p.m. at Kidd Brewer Stadium. ![]() | STANDINGS
