The 54-hole tournament was hosted by Elon at the par-72, 6,761/5,947-yard Sea Trail Golf Links.
Buoyed by a school-record 65 in Saturday’s second round, Johnson finished the tournament at eight-under-par (72-65-71-208), just two strokes behind individual titleist Josh Gallman from USC Upstate. However, Johnson, who bested the previous ASU-record round of 67 shot by David Thomas in 2002, was the only Mountaineer to finish better than 30th in the 99-player field and the squad finished 12th (300-284-294-878) in the 19-team field, 50 strokes back from champion Elon.
On the women’s side, Bowman carded rounds of 78, 76 and 76 to finish tied for 11th among 79 individuals, 15 strokes behind individual champ Andrea Downer from Murray State. As a team, the Mountaineers (329-319-316-964) placed 11th among 14 teams.
Elon also took home the title in the women’s tournament, besting Bethune-Cookman in a playoff. ASU finished 60 strokes behind the Phoenix.
Appalachian’s men return to action Oct. 6-8 at the Mission Inn Collegiate Classic in Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla. The ASU women hit the links again Saturday at the Great Smokies Invitational in Waynesville, N.C.
