BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University men’s golfer Casey Johnson and women’s golfer Mary Kate Bowman each claimed top-15 finishes to lead their respective squads tournaments held on Monday and Tuesday.

Johnson’s three-round total of even-par 216 (75-69-72) was good for a tie for 12th place at the Mizuno Southbridge Intercollegiate, hosted by Georgia Southern at the par-72, 6,922-yard Southbridge G.C. in Savannah, Ga. The top-15 finish was Johnson’s fourth in as many tournaments this fall.

On the women’s side, Bowman also tied for 12th with a 36-hole total of 155 (75-80) at the Spider Invitational, hosted by Richmond at the par-72, 6,079-yard Independence G.C. in Richmond, Va. Bowman’s top-15 finish was her third in four outings this fall.

Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, the men and women didn’t fare as well as teams as Johnson and Bowman did individually. ASU’s men tied for 13th out of 15 teams with a three-round total of 894 (304-293-297), 38 strokes behind Southern Conference-rival Georgia Southern, which beat Winthrop in a playoff to claim the team title. The Mountaineer women finished 10th in their 12-team field with a two-round score of 657 (330-327), 54 shots off the championship pace set by Maryland.

Both the men’s and women’s teams have one tournament left before beginning the season in earnest in the spring. The women close out the fall portion of the schedule Oct. 29-30 at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in Kiawah Island, S.C. (Oak Point G.C.), while the men conclude the fall Nov. 5-6 at the WCU Intercollegiate in Sapphire, N.C. (C.C. of Sapphire).
