ASU Wrestling Finishes 2-2 at Journeyman/Brute Northeast Duals

Nov. 24, 2007 - Troy, N.Y. - The Appalachian State Wrestling squad earned their first two dual meet victories of the season on Saturday afternoon at the Jouneyman/Brute Northeast Duals. The Mountaineers notched victories against Bucknell (24-12) and Binghamton (25-9), but fell to Central Michigan (30-6) and Maryland (31-7).

In the opening match of the day, ASU faced Central Michigan, falling by a 30-6 score. Only Mountaineer junior Ryan Scott and freshman Austin Trotman earned victories in 141-pounds and 184-pounds respectively. Scott won 4-3 while Trotman was victorious by a 3-2 margin, accounting for ASU’s six team points.

The Mountaineers earned their first win of the season by doubling-up Bucknell, 24-12. Sophomore Frank Celorrio claimed a 14-3 majority decision to open the match at 125-pounds. Senior Marcus Cox also earned a majority decision with a 18-10 victory in the 141-pound class. Seniors Scott Ervin and Eddie Hutchinson collected victories by a 4-1 margin (Ervin) and a pin after 5:50 (Hutchinson). Trotman and freshman Dylan Temple earned victories at 184 and 197, by 6-3 and 13-1 margins.

The Apps stumbled in their third match of the day, falling 31-7 to Maryland. Celorrio improved his record to 2-1 on the day with a 125-pound victory, 7-5. Cox also improved to 2-1 on the day with a 20-11 majority decision. In the loss, ASU falls to 0-2 against the ACC this season.

Appalachian returned to winning form in the final match of the day by defeating Binghamton, 35-9. Celorrio continued his dominant day at 125-pounds with a 9-0 majority decision to grab a quick lead. Senior Terreyl Williams followed suit at 133-pounds with a 20-9 victory. Scott earned a tech fall victory by a 22-7 (4:00) margin. Senior Tommy Hutchinson pinned his opponent after 3:28 to open up a string of five consecutive wins to close the match.

Senior Neal Martin claimed a 4-2 victory at 174-pounds, in a New York homecoming. Trotman improved to 3-1 on the day with a 7-2 victory. Freshman John Allen Griswold captured a majority decision victory at 197-pounds by a 11-1 margin. Junior Derrick Calloway notched an unopposed victory at 285-pounds, scoring six team points in the forfeit victory.

Appalachian, now 4-2 on the season will break for 21-days for exams before returning to action on December 15 on the road at Buffalo. The Quad match will pitt ASU against Buffalo, Bloomsburg and Wagner. The meeting will get underway at 9:00 a.m.
