Mountaineers Fall to UVA, 24-10

Jan. 19, 2008 - BOONE, N.C. - The Appalachian State wrestling team closed a two-match homestand with a 24-10 defeat at the hands of ACC foe UVA. Appalachian never led in the match, but was competitive throughout, losing two matches by only one point. With the loss, ASU falls to 7-8 (1-0, SoCon) and UVA improves to 11-3 (0-0, ACC) on the season

The match commenced with the 197-pound bout where freshman Dylan Temple was defeated 10-4 by UVA’s No. 19 ranked Brent Jones to give the Cavaliers an early 3-0 lead. At 285 pounds, Jared Campbell earned a third period escape and a UVA stalling penalty to best Jack Danilkowicz 2-1 to even the team match at 3-3. In the 125-pound bout, Corey Hulsey dropped a majority decision, 12-3, to UVA’s Ross Gitomer. The 4-point victory gave UVA the 7-3 lead after three bouts.

At 133-pounds, senior Terreyl Williams was the hard-luck loser, 4-3, to Cavalier Eric Albright. The loss put ASU down 10-3. In the 141-pound bout, Marcus Cox was on the short end of a majority decision, 15-6 to UVA’s Nick Nelson. At the halfway point, UVA widened the margin to 14-3. Senior Scott Ervin secured a majority decision over Pat Riley of UVA with a 10-2 victory. The win cut the UVA lead to 14-7.

Senior Eddie Hutchinson continued the ASU rally with a 6-0 victory at 157-pounds over Brent Fiorito to cut the lead to 14-10 in favor of UVA. Senior Tommy Hutchinson dropped a close 2-1 match to Michael Chaires, extending the UVA margin to 17-10 with two matches remaining.

In the match’s penultimate bout, 174-pounds, senior Neal Martin was defeated 11-4 by Chris Henrich of UVA, extending the Cavalier lead to 20-10 and clinching victory for UVA. Freshman Austin Trotman fell in a major decision to close the match, 8-0 to Rocco Caponi. The victory gave UVA the 24-10 triumph over the Mountaineers.

Appalachian will now travel to Chattanooga to face the Mocs on Sunday, Jan. 27. The conference match starts at 2 p.m.
