Mountaineers Pin Davidson, 37-8

Feb. 5, 2008 - BOONE, N.C. - The Appalachian State wrestling team continued their winning ways with a 38-8 victory over Davidson. Appalachian improves to 9-7 (2-1 SoCon) on the season while Davidson falls to 1-9 (0-4 SoCon). The Mountaineers scored three pins and a major decision victory in the win.

Sophomore Frank Cellorrio opened the match at 125-pounds against Ben Altman. Celorrio scored a quick two-point single leg takedown with only fifteen seconds gone. Altman escaped 48 seconds later to take the lead to 2-1. With only a minute remaining in the first period, Altman scored a takedown, followed shortly by a three-point near-fall. The first ended with Celorrio down 6-2. Altman extended his lead to 9-2 in the second thanks an escape and another takedown. Opening the final period in the neutral position, Altman scored another takedown and another three-point near fall . The near fall ended the match at 18-2 with five seconds remainin, scoring the tech. fall.

Senior Terreyl Williams faced Alex Radsky at 133-pounds. In the first minute, Williams claimed two takedowns and allowed Radsky to escape both times. After one period, the score was 4-2. In the second, Williams scored a three-point near fall followed by a takedown to extend his lead to 9-3 after five minutes. Radsky rallied in the final minute to earn a takedown to cut the score to 9-6. Williams escaped and earned a takedown of his own to get the final score of the match to 12-7.

Sophomore Mark Maya made his 2008 dual match debut against Vitaly Radsky in the 141-pound bout. Maya wasted no time earning a takedown with only six seconds off the clock. The wrestlers exchanged takedowns throughout the period ending the first three-minutes at 4-4. Maya trailed 6-7 after five minutes. Early in the third, Maya earned a two-point near-fall. The match ended with a 11-10 Maya victory

Senior Scott Ervin faced Joe Sandercock at 149-pounds. Ervin captured an early two-point takedown and converted the advantage into a pin after only 55 seconds. The pin is Ervin’s sixth of the season and improves his record to 28-5.

Senior Eddie Hutchinson faced Joe McGinley at 157-pounds. Eddie wasted no time, earning a takedown, three-point near-fall then a pin after 31 seconds. The pin is his fifth of the season and second in a row. Hutchinson improves his record to 12-9.

Senior Tommy Hutchinson was matched against Kevin Cook at 165-pounds. Hutchinson ran away with the match, scoring seven points in the first two periods. A stalling penalty against Cook and 5:18 of advantage time gave Hutchinson the 9-0 major decision. The win also gave ASU the 22-5 team match lead.

Senior Neal Martin faced fellow senior Trebor Clavette at 174-pounds. Clavette earned a takedown in the first period to lead 2-0 after three minutes. A Clavette escape and stalling penalty made the score after two-periods 3-1. Martin earned an escape from the bottom position off the whistle to cut the lead to 3-2. Clavette countered with a takedown to make the score 5-2. Martin escaped, but was takendown by Clavette late to win the match 7-3.

Freshman Austin Trotman squared off against junior Sam O’Hair at 184-pounds. Trotman scored a takedown in the first ten-seconds with another coming only 45-seconds from the first period horn. A pair of takedowns of the first minute of the first minute of the second-period pushed Trotman’s lead to 8-3. O’Hair rallied in the final 20-seconds of the second to score a takedown and cut into the Mountaineer lead 8-5 after two periods. Trotman out-scored his opponent 4-1 in the final period to take the final score 12-6.

Freshman Dylan Temple was unopposed as Davidson’s 197-pound wrestler could not make the journey up the mountain. With the forfeit victory, ASU tallied six additional team points extending the ASU lead to 31-8 entering the final match.

Junior Jared Campbell faced Charlie Wolff in the final match of the night, 285-pounds. Campbell earned a takedown early and converted the advantaged position into pin after only 2:04. The victory secured ASU’s second conference victory and ninth overall victory.

Appalachian returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 9 on the road against The Citadel. The battle between the Bulldogs and The Mountaineers gets underway at 2 p.m.
