(Back to Coach Index) John WeaverAlma Mater: Appalachian State University, 1971 Years at ASU: 26th Year E-Mail Coach Weaver John Weaver is in his 26th season as the director of the women’s track and cross country program and in his 12th season as the director of both the women’s and men’s programs. Weaver assumed the duties of directing both programs in the fall of 1995. A 1971 graduate of Appalachian, Weaver returned in 1979 to assist in the men’s program while earning his master’s degree in Biology. During his three year tenure as the men’s assistant, he trained two NCAA qualifiers and seven Southern Conference champions. Weaver took over the full-time coaching duties for the women’s program in 1982. Since that time the program, including cross country, indoor track and outdoor track, has produced a Division I National Champion in the 1500m twice, nine Division I all-Americans with 23 all-American performances, 16 D-I NCAA qualifiers, 227 Southern Conference individual champion performances, 595 all-Conference performances, 25 conference MVP athletes, 37 conference team championships, 22 conference coach of the year honors, 11 conference freshmen of the year honors and a two-time Southeast Region Coach of the Year. Since 2003, the NCAA has begun competition in track on a regional level. The Mountaineers have sent 30 athletes to regional competition. Since Weaver took over the men’s program in 1995, the Mountaineers have produced two NCAA Division I all-Americans, four NCAA all-American performances, nine Division I NCAA qualifiers, 143 Southern Conference individual champion performances, 304 all-conference performances, six conference MVP athletes, 15 conference team championships, eight coach of the year honors and one Southeast Region Coach of the Year honor. The Mountaineers have sent 23 athletes to regional competition. Under Weaver, Appalachian has qualified 23 men and 30 women to the East Regional Championships with six NCAA Championship qualifying performances. In 2004, Appalachian had it’s first East Region champion with a first place performance in the men’s 100m dash. Weaver has also worked as the Yosef Club Director (athletic fundraising arm of the ASU Foundation) from 1982 to 1985. He has also taught classes in the Education and Physical Education departments at Appalachian. A native of Fayetteville, N.C. Weaver graduated from Seventy-First High School in 1967. He earned his bachelor of science degree in biology in 1971 from Appalachian, returning to Fayetteville to teach biology and eventually take over the cross country and track programs at Douglas Byrd High School in 1972. His cross country dual meet record over eight years was 71-11 and his teams won six conference titles while competing in four state meet championships. His track teams produced many individual, conference and regional champions along with several state meet qualifiers. Currently, Weaver coaches the sprinters, hurdlers, multi-event athletes and relays while overseeing all aspects of the program. Weaver has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Track and Cross Country Committee effective September of 2006 and active until September of 2010. Each summer, Weaver directs the Grandfather Mountain Marathon, The Bear Road Race and two cross country team camps. Over 1,000 athletes attend camp at Appalachian each summer. Coach Weaver is married to Cynthia Harmon of Lenoir, N.C. and has two sons, Chase (19) a student at Appalachian and Jay (17), a student and runner at Watauga High School in Boone.
