The Indoor Performance Lab gives the Mountaineer Golf squads a comfortable environment to perfect their games.

Appalachian State University golf’s Indoor Performance Lab practice facility completed a major renovation in July 2010. It was expanded by over 30 percent, giving the men’s and women’s squads more than 2,000 square feet dedicated to short game and full swing practice in Varsity Gym.

Men’s golf head coach Bill Dicus said, “Coach Heather Brown and I are very grateful to Charlie Cobb and our administration for allowing this project to be done. Though we have had an indoor facility for the past decade, this renovation gives our students a venue to get quality practice and instruction and is a showplace facility for our sport.”

The facility features three separate areas – a short game room for working on putting stroke mechanics, a four-bay full swing room and an instruction lab. The instruction lab features high-speed video equipment as well as a Zelocity Pure Launch monitor and a Zelocity Pure Balance weight distribution analyzer. The centerpiece of the facility, however, is the SAM PuttLab, a putting stroke analyzer.

“We are also very thankful to the Nick Brown family of Pinehurst for providing much of the computerized equipment for the teaching lab,” stated Dicus. “We appreciate their generosity.”

Construction was done by Mike Shepherd Designs of Rockport, Texas. Their list of work includes the indoor turf center used on the Golf Channel’s television set as well as the indoor golf facilities for the Academy Sports megastore chain. State of the art artificial turf was used  in the completion of the project.

ASU’s golf teams have access to the facility 18 hours a day through a computerized lock system in each of the rooms.
